In the Acts of the Apostles it is known as
The Breaking of Bread.
In the First English Prayer Book it is called
The Supper of the Lord the Holy Communion, commonly called
The Mass.
In the East it is called
The Liturgy (meaning public duty)
Also it is known as
The Eucharist a Greek word meaning Thanksgiving.
The Mass is therefore part of the Church of England tradition and its use covers all the various activities of our worship:- praise, penitence, scripture reading, instruction, intercession, offering, communion, thanksgiving etc.
The Mass is a celebration, an occasion including a meal shared by friends, the parish family gathered for worship.
A family is united when sharing a meal in common round a table. We are God's family, brothers and sisters in Christ, gathered at the altar, the Lord's table.
It is a foretaste of the final, never ending joy of our family reunion in heaven.
